Don’t Always Take a Man at His Word
IN 1992, FEELING MY OWN GOLF GAME WAS NOT WHAT IT COULD and should be, I did an introspective search. Was my playing condition mental, physical, or technical? Concluding that my hand-eye coordination was not exactly what it should be, I sought out the best available eye doctor to help me.
Dr. Robert Hepler, head of ophthalmology at UCLA’s Jules Stein Clinic, was recommended. After an initial consultation, we made a date for a thorough examination two weeks later.
Three days after the consultation I received a beautiful letter from Dr. Hepler as a follow-up. I was now convinced beyond any doubt that I had found the right man. He suggested that I bring a driver to my upcoming appointment. He didn’t suggest I bring a putter, an iron, or a wedge. He told me in no uncertain terms to bring my driver, which was the longest club in my bag. He must have reasoned, I concluded, that any deficiency would be more pronounced with the longer club. I was sold—and he was a nongolfer, no less.
On the morning of my appointment I went by my golf shop at Bel-Air and selected a brand-new driver for the occasion; the price tag was still attached. My wife, who accompanied me, was thinking, “What a nice gesture on Eddie’s part, to take his new doctor a gift.”
As the three of us—Lisa, the driver, and myself—entered the waiting room, other patients wondered why this crazy guy would be bringing a golf club to a doctor’s office. Little did they know.
When Dr. Hepler saw me, he realized what had happened and burst into laughter. “I meant to bring a driver to drive you home after the examination,” he stated. My story spread like wildfire through the UCLA community. I was a laughingstock. The new driver was mounted and hung on Dr. Hepler’s office wall like a big trophy fish, its price tag still dangling. The Little Pro paid the price for his naïveté!
